The aim of this study was to investigate the coaches’ perceptions about the uses and contents during time-outs. 21 basketball and volleyball coaches of formative sports (U15, U17 and U19) from Buenos Aires (Argentina) participated. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted and qualitatively analyzed using Grounded Theory method. The reasons for requesting time-outs are related to three aspects: 1) performance, 2) psychological aspects and 3) aspects linked to the development of the match. The most prevalent category was Motives related to performance. Likewise, the characteristics of the message, the recipients and other aspects of time-out management are relevant for coaches. Finally, when the opposing team requests a time-out, coaches report that they have warmer and more encouraging communication with their athletes. The results obtained provide information about the reasons why coaches usually ask for a time-out, the use they make of this resource and the interaction they maintain with the athletes during this game-detention time.
