Analysis of the predominance of the techniques used in the final rounds of international competitions judo scoring for the olympic ranking

The aim of the present study was to characterise technique predominance and scoring technique predominance among judokas competing in the final stages of international competitions contributing to the Olympic ranking. A total of 285 judo contests from different male and female weight categories were observed during the final stages of seven international competitions included in the qualification process for Tokyo 2021. An observational system based on the Kodokan classification of judo techniques was used. In Tachi-Waza, leg techniques (Ashi-Waza) and arm techniques (Te-Waza) were the predominant technical classes, whereas in Ne-Waza, immobilisation techniques (Osaekomi-Waza) predominated, followed by choking techniques (Shime-Waza) and elbow joint locking techniques (Kansetsu-Waza). Differences between sexes, significant associations between weight categories, and variations in technical behaviour according to the different phases of combat were also observed.
