HANDTAC: Validation of a sport‑specific small‑sided game (3v3 + goalkeepers) test for tactical assessment in U‑21 female handball players

The aim of this study was to validate HANDTAC, a sport-specific test designed to quantitatively assess tactical performance in handball. An instrument validation design was applied in three phases: (1) content validity analysis, (2) sensitivity to discriminate between players with different levels of experience, and (3) reliability through a test–retest approach. The protocol consisted of 3 vs. 3 situations plus goalkeepers in a 15 × 30 m court, played in two 3-minute periods. Thirty-six U-21 female players participated (19 with higher experience, 17 with lower experience). Content validity was excellent (CVC = 0.932). The test demonstrated high sensitivity, showing significant differences between groups in offensive and defensive tactical performance indices (p < 0.001; d = 1.89 and 1.41). Reliability was moderate in the more experienced group (ICC = 0.50–0.59) and variable in the less experienced group (ICC = 0.18–0.64), with Bland-Altman plots indicating moderate dispersion between repeated measures. In conclusion, HANDTAC is a valid and sensitive instrument for measuring tactical performance in handball. It provides coaches and researchers with an applied tool to optimize training methodologies and advance scientific evaluation of the game.
